Lack of flexibility is one big reason I'm not interested in Evernote for general use, although to EN has been getting more and more robust, and a paid Evernote account now allows you to store non-supported (incl. MS Office) files. See my recent post for what I believe is a smarter solution in most contexts.

Hi Dan,

I thought you might be interested in an update....

I've written a couple of scripts to connect DEVONthink and Evernote -- You can find them here!

There are also some scripts on my site now that address your concerns about openness by providing HTML/RTF export from Evernote.

Let me know what you think!

Kind Regards,
Justin

Zvi – concur. The beauty of Evernote is that it can theoretically capture those handwritten notes as well... but of course it's easy to get out of the habit of capturing that info. My physical inbox is always more cluttered than my electronic one.

I love evernote. The more important thing than the actual features of it is getting in the mindset of actually using something like evernote.

I've used evernote and love it. However, when the phone rings or I run into a meeting, I always end up opting for pen and paper...

Great way to put it in terms of short- vs long-term memory – I agree. I'd like to see a more seamless transition between the two, though.

I think you've got it -- spot on!

Evernote isn't a replacement for a program like DEVONthink, but it's a useful supplement to it. For my workflow, I tend to think of Evernote as "short-term memory" and DEVON as my "long-term memory": The stuff that I'm currently working on (and need easy web access to) goes into Evernote. When it's time to file stuff away, DEVON scoops it up.

The lack of nested folder hierarchies in Evernote "cramps my style" as well -- hoping that they change that (as well as address the "openness" issues you raise in this post). That said, Evernote is really on the right track!

If they can continue to refine the product, I think they may end up at the top of many people's lists for information management.
